Introducing the 1+1 Programme

The Found Futures 1+1 programme gives 16-18 year olds a look into architecture and design through an in school workshop, a visit to a design studio, and a work experience opportunity.

The 1+1 programme seeks to inspire future architects and designers by connecting them with industry professionals and students already pursuing this career path. It includes a hands-on workshop led by a qualified architect, where young people interested in architecture can collaborate to realise a design idea through model making. After this workshop, participants visit a professional architecture studio for a day to learn about the workplace.

Students who demonstrate genuine interest and skill during the workshop will get one-week’s work experience in a design studio. This opportunity will help them expand their knowledge, communication skills, networks, and strengthen their applications for further education and training.

1+1 Programme Structure

The programme is broken down into two parts as follows:

Part 1 - Model Making Workshop

  • A full day workshop focusing on model making, in response to a stimulus or theme agreed with the partner school. The workshop is delivered in the school classroom and led by a workshop leader and professional architect.

  • Students work in groups and are guided throughout the day by a professional architect to create a model of their design idea, while becoming familiarised with new terminology and thinking about the materials used within their design.

  • At the end of the day the students present their model to a peer audience, explaining how they responded to the stimulus/theme and their design decisions.

  • The workshop enables students to develop new model making skills, while building teamwork, problem solving and time management skills, as they will only have 1 school day (4 - 6 hours approx) to realise their idea.

  • Through presenting their ideas to the class group, students develop valuable communication skills that are transferable to an interview setting.

Part 2 - Work Experience & Studio Visit

  • Work experience is a valuable offering to young people who are interested in pursuing a career in architecture and design.

  • The 1+1 Programme facilitates work experience for a small group of students for 1 week.

  • Students get to work closely with architects and designers in a professional studio.

  • We have found that by sending a small group of 2 or more young people, the experience is less daunting, and students can fully engage throughout the week. In this framework, they grow in confidence as the week goes on and suceed at completing tasks assigned to them.

  • At the end of the week, participants deliver a short presentation on what they have been up to, with support and guidance from the architecture and design studio.

If work experience is not something the school or college is able to accommodate, a one day visit to a professional architecture studio is an alternative format we can offer:

  • Students will get to see the inside of a studio, go for a tour of the building or office and ask questions about projects and the work the studio does.

  • The studio visit takes place during a weekday and lasts 3 - 4hours. It can therefore be accommodated during the schoolday, for example 11:00 - 14:00.

  • The studio visit can accommodate a larger group of students, for example one class group, accompanied by a teacher.

Why work with us?

We believe the 1+1 Programme helps to foster a positive relationship between schools and architecture and design studios and gives young people a clear example of their potential future, should they wish to pursue a career in architecture and design. But don’t just take our word for it, here’s what our participants and partners say...
